How the RSGB can help me

The RSGB supports both new and seasoned Morse (CW) operators, acting as a guide, connector, and advocate for the mode within UK amateur radio.

The RSGB aims to support newcomers by:

  • Using these web pages to introduce Morse code in an approachable way, explaining what CW is, why it is still relevant, and how to get started without needing complex or expensive equipment

  • Providing learning pathways, signposting trusted training resources, online tools and clubs, so beginners are not left to figure things out alone

  • Encouraging confidence, reinforcing that Morse is not only for experts or high-speed operators, and that enjoyable operating is possible at any speed

  • Connecting learners with the community, helping newcomers discover on-air activities such as GB2CW and its friendly post-broadcast nets, with operators who are happy to slow down and support those still learning

Resources the RSGB provides for those learning Morse:

  • Providing the Morse Certificate of Competency online, on-demand and in person at specific events such as National Hamfest and the RSGB Convention

  • Awards chasing is one of the most exciting parts of amateur radio. You can choose Morse as your operating mode in most of the RSGB awards. Keep an eye out for a new award we will be launching soon which is designed specifically for CW

  • GB2RS in Morse – use this handy online tool developed by newsreader Graham, G4JBD which plays Morse code based on the current GB2RS News script at a variety of different speeds

  • GB2CW is a CW broadcast transmitted on both HF and VHF. You can view the schedule here.

  • Projects and activities to help inspire young CW learners including how to build a ‘Snail Morse key‘ and then use it to play Morse battleships

  • If you’re visiting the RSGB National Radio Centre you can try Morse for the first time with help from our friendly and supportive volunteers. You’ll even be given a Certificate of Achievement for successfully sending your name in Morse Code. The Centre also holds seasonal events such as ‘Find the spy transmitter‘ – keep an eye out on our news channels to be the first to hear about these

For seasoned operators, the RSGB supports continued growth and engagement by:

  • Promoting advanced operating activities through contesting, DXing and awards

  • Championing CW within the wider hobby, ensuring Morse code remains visible, valued, and respected as part of the UK amateur radio landscape

We also have a number of videos to support you – from a 60-second question in Morse to a webinar on improving your skills. Visit the web page here.
