British Science Week events 2026

Newton Leys Primary School

These are just some of the groups that organised British Science Week 2026 activities – what will you do for 2027?

  • Members of 1924 Squadron of the Air Cadets, based near Croydon, Surrey built the FM receiver kits during their usual evening session.

  • Altrincham Grammar School for girls (GX1AGS) built FM radio receiver kits and Morse code tutor kits. They also opened up the existing club to more students, as well as linking amateur radio with the physics curriculum

  • Bishop Auckland Radio Amateur’s Club (G4TTF) worked with a range of schools in the Bishop Auckland area. Activities included FT8 and Morse. Students received certificates in recognition of their achievement and participation.

  • Bishop Auckland RAF Air Cadets – members of the 2505 Squadron held a Morse-a-thon evening for RAF Cadets on 12 March. They sent and received Morse code to each other either by sound or by light. All cadets received a certificate of competence signed by their CO and the RSGB BSW Co-ordinator, Ian, G7IGN, if they succeeded.

  • Bushvalley Amateur Radio Club (GI3BRC) held a British Science Week event for its young members, friends and families. During the event, the Club had a scheduled QSO with GB3RS at the National Radio Centre, Bletchley Park. Attendees built RSGB FM radio kits, took part in radio direction finding with BBC Micro:bits, tinkered with SnapCircuits and explained about radio waves with the RSGB’s “Riding the Wave” activity.

  • Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society  (GX0MWT) held a ‘Practical Skills Night’. They built the Morse Tutor kits funded by the RSGB as a result of funding from the RCF and the RSGB Legacy Fund and provided by Kanga Products. They also had their usual quiz and table top sales.

  • Crowthorne & Wokingham Without NMI Men’s Shed with Bracknell ARC, operated as G8EYM. 

  • Lincolnshire Portable Radio Group were supported by Andy, M0IYE and Rose, M1RXO and worked with the International Bomber Command Centre education department, running a day for BSW on Saturday 14 March from 10.30 to 4pm. This was a big event for youth, with around 200 children taking part. Each young participant helped build a transmitter and receiver kit. They were also shown how communication has progressed from flying a Mosquito to a location and report back with Morse code. The group tried Morse code on keys using “bathtub keys” from Lancaster Bombers and an Aldis lamp. At the same time there was a live feed from the ISS on the big screen and a demonstration of LEO tracking. They had a QO-100 station doing voice and also had a sked with GB3RS at the NRC.

  • Newton Leys Primary School in Bletchley held assemblies as part of its British Science Week work. The school introduced radio and HF to the students and contacted GB3RS at the National Radio Centre as part of their assemblies at 9:30 and 10:00 on that day.

  • Norfolk Amateur Radio Club (NARC) supported the City of Norwich School with its “Super Science Saturday” on Saturday 14 March at the Skinner Centre.   

  • South Derbyshire & Ashby Woulds Amateur Radio Group (G0SRC) hosted an open weekend for all the family

  • St Peter-In-Thanet CE Junior School took part in the “Riding the Waves project

  • The Royal Signals Museum Outreach team visited Milldown Academy, Blandford Forum where they ran a day of activities for 60 pupils (aged 10 and 11 years). It included: programming robots using iPads; using Morse code; and operating GB100RSM in a 1970 ex- Army communications lorry.

  • The RSGB National Radio Centre offered groups and clubs the opportunity to get its sought after GB3RS call sign by arranging skeds.

  • Wick High School Radio Club (GM0WHS) ran CW nets on V-band throughout the week

  • Ysgol Y Waun Primary School in Wrexham and Gwernymynydd County Primary School worked with John, 2W0SKU, secretary of the Mold Military Radio Operators Group, and set up an HF station (including FT8)

*A “sked” refers to a pre-arranged radio contact, meaning a scheduled time to communicate with another radio operator on a particular frequency.
