Survey on amateur radio
The International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) Region 1 is holding a strategic workshop to understand:
- How national societies can attract new radio amateurs
- How the IARU can better support the amateur radio community, and its member societies adapt to changes
- What the IARU and member societies can jointly do to support the growth of amateur radio
Each of the national societies in the region has been asked to describe the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that apply to amateur radio in their country.
The RSGB has asked radio amateurs in the UK—including Crown Dependencies—and those not yet licensed to help by answering the following questions:
- Strengths – what are the good things about amateur radio in the UK?
- Weakness – in what ways is amateur radio weak in the UK?
- Opportunities – what trends or changes in the environment could amateur radio in UK take advantage of?
- Threats – what trends or changes in the environment could have a negative impact on amateur radio in UK?
We were looking for answers that address key strategic challenges for UK amateur radio such as its future relevance in a changing world, rather than focusing on localised issues.
We were delighted that over 1,000 people replied to the survey. The survey is now closed.
We have published a summary of the responses.
The RSGB is planning further work which will link to the Society’s strategy update, but we will announce details of that separately.
