Spectrum defence – ongoing concerns

The RSGB is collaborating with the IARU and national societies on the following ongoing spectrum concerns:

VLF

  • eLORAN (Enhanced LORAN), a long-range radio navigation system

HF

  • Wireless power – beam / non-beam (also applies in the Microwave bands)

  • High-speed financial trading and other emerging HF applications

  • EMC noise floor (including solar panels and wireless car charging)

  • We are secondary users in many of the bands, and so can be affected by primary users (also applies to VHF)

Top HF / bottom VHF

  • Being used for space weather sensors

UHF

  • AST SpaceMobile on 70cms

UHF / SHF

  • Further shared use affecting our secondary allocations

  • Ongoing pressures from the mobile industry for 4G, 5G and now 6G spectrum

  • Satellite constellations needing spectrum for Direct-2-Handset/Device

  • Emerging spectrum needs for Lunar colonisation and science

Undertaking this work gives the RSGB Spectrum and EMC teams great insight into emerging technologies, potential opportunities and concerns.
