Amplitude Modulation ARS
The Amplitude Modulation Amateur Radio Society (AMARS) is a small and friendly society established in 2021 by radio hams keen to preserve the use of the original voice mode, ie amplitude modulation. Using modern, vintage, ex-military, commercial, or homebrew equipment, and utilising all amateur bands where AM is permitted, the society encourages members to promote the AM voice mode through on-air activities, regular society meetings, and attendance at rallies and exhibitions.
Membership is open to anyone, whether licensed or a listener, and club meetings are held virtually via Zoom every month. Club nights typically feature a speaker or presentation on topics related to AM, although this is by no means exclusive, as any interesting topic is always welcome.
The current club project is an AM transmitter based around a Class E amplifier. The project provides a focus for members to share ideas and discuss the construction and setup of an AM transmitter and to encourage its ultimate use on-air as part of a club activity weekend.
The Society also produces a newsletter (Full Carrier) containing equipment articles of interest, news of members’ activities, upcoming events and general AMARS information in addition to Full Carrier, specific AM operating events are organised, such as the AM QSO party and a low-key AM contest designed for those wanting to try contesting in a stress-free environment. Furthermore, an AMARS net is planned for the future.
The Society has a callsign, G5AMS, and secondary regional locators (e.g., GX5AMS), to which members have access should they wish to use them, for example, at a special event.
AMARS is affiliated with the RSGB, and we have associations with like-minded organisations in South Africa, France and the AM Amateur Radio Europe Facebook Group.
If you wish to join us and celebrate the joy of using the AM mode, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our treasurer, Simon Taylor (MW0NWM), via m3set@yahoo.co.uk or find us on Facebook: Amplitude Modulation Amateur Radio Society.
