7 July 2025 – My radio journey with UKBOTA by Tony Hodge, M0TNI and Jason Dale, 2E0JIV
The presentation
Tony Hodge, M0TNI and Jason Dale, 2E0JIV discuss their journey into amateur radio, what they enjoy about it, and how they got involved in UK Bunkers on the Air (UKBOTA).
About the presenters
Tony Hodge, M0TNI
Following his retirement, Tony wanted to try listening to nearby airfields, both commercial and military.
After some research into scanners and their capabilities, he discovered that ARISS listened to radio amateurs through the ISS repeater, and realised he had to give it a try.
In 2023, this led to Tony progressing from his Foundation to Full licence in eight months.
Prior to discovering amateur radio, Tony held three contrasting careers in academic research, contracts management, and as a Pastor.
He has always had an interest in technical hobbies which has included photography, CB Radio in the 80s, and computing from pre-PC days onwards.
Jason Dale, 2E0JIV
After 22 years in the army working operationally with both Clansman and Bowman radio systems, Jason took a break from radio.
It wasn’t until 11 years later, while sitting in a doctor’s surgery flicking through a copy of RadCom, that amateur radio caught his interest.
Soon after, he gained his Foundation licence.
It wasn’t until 2023 that he stumbled across United Kingdom Bunkers on the Air (UKBOTA) on Facebook.
Activating bunkers lit the fire for both his love of radio and his passion for military history.
He is currently busy activating more sites, which is being fuelled by his semi-retirement.
