Glyn Jones, GW0ANA – 29 June 2026

Barry Amateur Radio Society (BARS) was shocked and deeply saddened to learn that it’s long-time Chairman Glyn Jones, became Silent Key on Monday 29 June 2026 aged 88. He became unwell whilst on a cruise around Britain and was transferred to hospital in County Donegal where he sadly passed away. BARS sends its sincere condolences to his wife Midge (Marged), his children and grandchildren, wider family and to his many friends throughout the world.

After starting his adult life as a seaman, Glyn married and came ashore to settle in his beloved town of Cowbridge, Glamorgan in his native Wales. He soon became interested in amateur radio, became licensed and was a founder member of our Society. He eventually became Chairman and for 30 years was the dominant driving force, inspiring and growing the membership. His skill as an enthusiastic organiser resulted in the Society becoming one of the most active and successful clubs in the country. He was always a dedicated supporter of the RSGB and as a volunteer he served for many years as Regional Representative for South Wales Region 7.

Glyn was an avid DXer and held awards for his contacts around the world on all bands and modes including CW. He took part in and organised several DXpeditions including one to St. Helena.

One of his strongest interests was the celebration of the work of Marconi and his historic transmission from Lavernock Point near Barry to Flat Holm Island in the Severn Estuary. He organised many special events related to Marconi and led several IOTA style international expeditions to the island.

Glyn will be sorely missed but not forgotten.
