GM4JJJ’s interests in amateur radio, astronomy and photography all came together in this extraordinary real-colour image of the Aurora.

First licensed as GM8HEY, David was heavily involved in the pioneering work of George Burt, GM3OXX on long-distance contacts using 10GHz wideband FM/MCW. From his own station, GM4JJJ became a very active VHF-UHF DXer, making contacts as far as EA8. Turning to moonbounce, the need for accurate moon tracking evolved into the highly successful MoonSked software, which made him known to hundreds of users worldwide. It was very fitting that the first 2m EME contact for Joe Taylor, K1JT was with GM4JJJ.

Over the past several years, David was undergoing treatment for spinal cancer that severely limited his mobility, but he still kept looking forward, developing his station and making further plans. Typical of his positive outlook was that in periods of remission he configured the house wiring and the shack for remote control from his iPad – from anywhere. Even when he was confined to a hospital chair for chemotherapy, GM4JJJ was still making DX contacts on 6m and 2m! David was an example to us all, and a presence on the VHF-UHF bands that will be sadly missed.
