RSGB Youth Champion (Schools) Sophie Bourne, M9LBW

Why did you choose to volunteer with the RSGB? To encourage young people to get involved and to meet people through volunteering.
How long have you been an RSGB volunteer? I’ve been a volunteer since October 2025, when I attended the RSGB Convention and was part of the youth stand. Since then, I’ve taken part in a Tonight@8 webinar, attended the membership strategy workshop and then recently took on the role of Youth Champion for Schools.
What would you say to people who are thinking of volunteering? I would say that volunteering is really rewarding and a great way to get more involved in amateur radio. You don’t have to have a lot of experience; when I started, I had been licensed for less than a year. I’ve gained a lot from volunteering including meeting new people, exploring new areas of amateur radio and giving back to the community. Even giving up a small amount of time can make a big difference.
Which aspect of amateur radio would you still like to try? I’d like to explore satellite communication more. I had a taste of it when I took part in the ISS contact at the YOTA Camp in Paris last year and really enjoyed it.
