2 December – Basic modelling and antennas for portable HF by Tim Hier, G5TM
The presentation
This presentation will focus on the various HF antennas available for portable operating and how to use very basic modelling software to ascertain the choices we have at our disposal.
Topics include balancing the convenience of multi-band systems with some trade-off in performance; a look at using 40 metres portable; the importance of location when operating HF portable; how to power your station and the advantages of operating HF portable.
About Tim
Tim was first licensed in July 2017 and progressed to Intermediate and finally to a Full licence in August 2019. Tim’s main passion is antennas (mostly HF) and he is a strong advocate of portable and mobile HF operating.
Tim lives in West Sussex and is fortunate enough to live near the coast so frequently benefits from the natural amplifier produced by being close to the salt water. His ethos is simple when working portable, “five minutes from arrival to operating and no more” and it is this that governs his approach to HF portable operating.
Tim also enjoys HF contesting and has the ambition (just started) to learn CW and broaden his skills.
Tim is the Editor of RadCom Basics.
