Edward Arnold Matthews, G3FZW, 23rd March 2016
Edward Arnold Matthews, G3FZW, died on 23rd March 2016.
Arnold was Deputy Regional Manager in the Midland region for a number of years in the early 2000s, with Dr Roy Clark as Regional Manager. He was responsible also for assisting the Air Training Corps at Dudley and Penkridge getting their amateur radio licence exams.
He was Cannock Chase Amateur Radio Club secretary when South Staffs Amateur Radio Tutors’ Group was teaching at Cannock and was our ‘guiding hand’. He was, in fact, instrumental in forming the group, aiding us with all the dealings with RSGB. We would have been lost without his help.
Arnold was a master with words when we used to meet on Thursday evenings at Cannock Chase Amateur Radio Club. Alec Mitchell, one of our little group who used to have a drink together after the club meeting would say to Arnold: “I have a word for you”. He would then tell Arnold the word, having searched the Oxford English Dictionary for the most obscure word he could find. Arnold would then give him the definition of the word almost as if reading it from the book itself! No matter how obscure the word he never failed or was stumped for the answer. He was truly amazing!
