YOTA Bulgaria Day 5

| July 14, 2019

What did you get up to on Day 5?
To begin we had a quick fire Train the Trainer lecture. Every country gave a snapshot of their radio amateur youth. Later we had introductions to ARDF and high speed telegraphy. We were amazed by the immense speeds of Morse possible. After this, we took part in hands-on direction finding in a park.

What was your favourite bit?
ARDF was new to all UK team members. Learning about the equipment, organisation and operation provided useful skills. After the talk it was great to put the knowledge into practice in a fox hunt! The RSGB provided ARDF receivers that allowed us to locate five beacons in a Bulgarian park.

What did you learn that you didn’t know originally?
We learnt about the breadth of youth activities around Europe, and in particular the organisation of sub-regional events. Smaller scale youth events like these would be successful in the UK.

What are you looking forward to next?
I am excited to get hands on making 2m and 20m antennas. We will have fun at the leaving party but it will be sad say goodbye to our new international friends. We will stay in touch to plan future YOTA activities.
