Meet Eric, K9GY (USA)

We caught up with Eric, K9GY at WRTC 2026, where he was attending as a spectator. Eric joined the RSGB at the 2026 Dayton Hamvention.

How long have you been licensed? And why did you get into amateur radio?

Since 1977. My dad was a high school electronics teacher and wanted to fly his radio controlled planes on the 50 MHz band (6m). So he pursued an amateur radio licence. I went along to copy the Morse code and eventually got my licence as well.

What would you say is the best thing about RSGB membership?

So far it’s been the free entry to Bletchley Park, which has come in useful for my visit to the UK in June and July.

What would you say to someone considering whether to join the RSGB?

I believe it’s important to support national societies that advocate on ham radio’s behalf.

What is your favourite mode?

CW, 20 through 10m mainly, contesting.

What have enjoyed most about WRTC?

Meeting other hams.
