7 September 2020 – Portable adventures with Summits On The Air (SOTA) by James Stevens, M0JCQ
James’ presentation
Portable operating is addictive, whether it’s on a grassy hill top or on a bona fide mountain. The Summits On The Air (SOTA) award scheme allows you to combine amateur radio with some adventure. James, M0JCQ will introduce the basics of SOTA, while showing you some of the beautiful and wild places it’s taken him and his long-suffering—but immensely supportive—wife. He’s activated SOTA summits around the UK, mainland Spain, the Canary Islands, Portugal and the United States. He’s activated hills, volcanoes and mountains using bands from 160m up to 70cm. In this webinar he’ll take you through some of the equipment needed and his top tips for starting your own adventure.
About James
James, M0JCQ is an enthusiastic portable operator who seeks to combine walking with amateur radio, having completed 227 SOTA activations and visited 138 unique SOTA summits. He’s interested in all bands from 160m up to 70cm while portable, with a special focus on VHF. His other passion is travel, which this year was very much stifled by COVID-19—in better times, he has walked throughout the Nepalese Himalaya, having reached both Annarpurna and Everest Base Camps. When he’s not up in the clouds, he’s going down to the bottom of the ocean, as a keen scuba diver—highlights including; a night dive in Thailand surrounded by bioluminescence and barracuda, almost getting stung by a Stingray in the Maldives, and accidentally kicking a giant turtle in the Philippines.
James has recently started writing as a guest columnist for the RadCom VHF/UHF column.
