Martyn Vincent, G3UKV – 3 January 2024

Martyn was District Representative 53 for Shropshire, North Worcestershire and West Birmingham, previously the Regional Representative for Region 5 and also a previous member of the Nominations Committee. Martyn was also a well very respected member of the microwave and contesting communities. Our thoughts are with Martyn’s family and friends.

Rick Hewett, M0LEP sent in this personal tribute to Martyn: I was very sad to hear the news of Martyn’s passing. He has, for many years, been the operator behind a regular Thursday morning GB2CW broadcast on 80m, and made over 800 such broadcasts, the last of which was on 28 December 2023. Unusually, his broadcast format was a mixed-mode one, with CW transmissions interspersed with an SSB read-back of the text just sent and advice about learning and using Morse code. This very accessible format was particularly helpful for me when I was struggling to learn Morse code. After the broadcast he’d take calls using his own callsign, and I welcomed this chance to chat afterwards, too. Sometimes conversation would drift away from amateur radio onto other topics of interest to him, like restoration work on the canal network. This is just one small facet of his contribution to amateur radio in the UK, but it too will be missed.
