Donald Radley, G4ABI – 26 May 2023
It is with great sadness I report that Donald (Don) Radley, G4ABI became a silent key on 26 May 2023. Don passed away suddenly, but peacefully, at the Hastings Conquest Hospital, aged 79, just 2 months short of 80.
As a teenager Don had an interest in radio and joined the London Territorial Army Signals Regiment, where he met his first wife Ann. Soon after their marriage they moved to Ghana where Don began a career of over 30 years working abroad as a manager of Eveready Battery facilities.
Don’s first amateur licence was 9G1GE in Ghana and he subsequently held 9J2GE, ST2/G4ABI and 5Z4FN. He retired with his second wife, Marlies, to Cyprus in 1998 and became 5B4AGQ. He was always a regular participant in the annual Commonwealth Contest and keen to support local radio clubs, most recently the Paphos Amateur Radio Club. He was a member of The Royal Signals Amateur Radio Society and held the special Cyprus callsign, C4SIG, to use in RSARS events.
Sadly, Marlies passed away in 2020 and Don returned to the UK permanently in 2022, after living over 55 years abroad.
He will be much missed by all his family and friends.
Tribute by Steve Down G3USE.
