Don Pike, G3WDY, 24 January 2014
It is with great sorrow that I am writing to inform RSGB members of the death of my father, Don Pike, G3WDY.
He died peacefully in Dorset on 24th January 2014 after a period of ill health.
He joined the RSGB in December 1965, while perfecting his morse code and gained his licence in March 1967. From then on he was actively on air, as his numerous log books and QSL cards can testify.
He spent most of his life in the Crystal Palace area of London. He was an active member of Crystal Palace Radio and Electronics Club which he joined in 1994 and was Chairman of the Club for some time. He was active in HF and VHF communications and enjoyed making various items of equipment as well as working with valves.
He was also a regular GB2RS news reader for South East England for many years until 2011, so may have been a familiar voice to southern RSGB members. In addition, he ran a lively pre-news net most Sundays, and greatly enjoyed making contacts with other radio amateurs in the UK and abroad.
