Youth Champion (Scouts, Cadets and Guides), Sam McCutchion, M7UEL
How long have you been an RSGB Volunteer? Since February 2025, so just over four months.
Why did you choose to volunteer? I originally reached out to enquire about participating in the YOTA Summer camp and then found out about the vacancy for what is now my current role. Given my history in Scouting, it seemed like the logical next step to help bring my two interests closer, and to volunteer in a different way than I have done previously!
What do you hope to get out of volunteering in your new role? My main goal is to enjoy myself. If in doing so I can help promote the hobby to others and increase activity in youth I will be very pleased, but if I don’t enjoy what I’m doing I’ll never be able to convince others it’s fun! So far that’s been going very well, including meeting new friends and trying new parts of the hobby.
What would you say to people thinking about volunteering with the RSGB? Give it a try! Everyone is very friendly and accepting. Worst case is that you give it a try and decide it’s not for you. I’ve enjoyed it so far!
Fun fact: do you prefer operating or tinkering/constructing? Definitely operating. Whilst I do enjoy the tinkering side, I enjoy contesting far too much!
