GB2RS Newsreader, Pete Sobye, G0PNM
How long have you been an RSGB volunteer? I don’t know exactly! It’s certainly been a few years both in the role of Morse Assessor and GB2RS Newsreader.
Why did you choose to volunteer? A Society like ours cannot operate without volunteers. Many core roles are carried out by members who give their time to the Society. I am a firm believer that you get out of the RSGB what you put in.
What have you gained from volunteering? I get an immense sense of pride that I am doing my bit to support our national society. Plus, as a volunteer you get a lovely, enamelled pin badge each year!
What would you say to people thinking about volunteering for the RSGB? I believe you get out it what you put in. As a Morse Assessor I was able to share the passion I have for CW. Seeing members learn Morse for themselves is wonderful, given it is no longer a licensing requirement. Also, supporting the RSGB in my local area as a GB2RS Newsreader is fantastic. To anyone thinking about volunteering, do it! There is a brilliant support network in place within the Society to guide you. There are many different volunteering roles available too. There really is something for everyone.
Fun fact: do you prefer operating or tinkering/constructing? I am definitely more of an operator than a builder. My favourite mode is CW. I get a lot of enjoyment from operating the key both from my shack as well as out and about as part of the POTA scheme.
