Born in Glasgow in 1935, Alex served his engineering apprenticeship with Howdens Engineering before attending the Moray Sea School in Burghead, and subsequently joining the Merchant Service in 1956.

He served as Engineer 2nd Class for Cunard on several transatlantic passenger liners including the RMS Queen Elizabeth and RMS Ivernia where he met June, his first wife, and mother of his four sons.

After becoming a father, Alex left the Merchant Service and took up employment with Roche Products in Dalry in Ayrshire, where he spent over 20 years helping to run their power generation facility.

It was during the late 1970’s that Alex became interested in amateur radio and attended classes at the Greenock radio club.

After passing his exams, he taught himself Morse and primarily spent his time operating CW on HF, and latterly became interested in SSTV.

Alex will be deeply missed by his sons Harry, William and Ian, and also by his sister Helen.
