| October 6, 2023

The RSGB were delighted to present Trevor Hughes, G4WKJ with the RSGB National Radio Centre (NRC) ‘Volunteer of the Year’ Award 2023.

RSGB General Manager, Steve Thomas, M1ACB surprised Trevor with the award in recognition of his long service to the NRC and in particular for his personal contribution in developing the Snail Morse Key which has been used by the Society. Trevor was presented with the award in front of his wife, Diana, and in the company of many of his NRC colleagues.

Martyn Baker, G0GMB, RSGB NRC Coordinator, said, “Trevor is highly regarded by the volunteer team for the huge amount of time he has devoted in helping to ensure the success of the NRC, welcoming visitors and delighting them by offering young enthusiasts one of his Snail Morse Key kits to build at home.”

As well as volunteering his time every week since the NRC opened at Bletchley Park in 2012, Trevor also conceived the idea, designed and built the hugely popular Snail Morse Key, which has been used extensively in outreach work. Over the years Trevor has donated at his own expense over 2,000 kits, with well over 1,000 more being provided by the RSGB for young people and adults alike to enjoy at special events. The intention has always been to provide a simple but effective working Morse key kit which can be built at home which helps to inspire construction and having fun learning Morse code.

Many congratulations Trevor and thank you for sharing your passion with so many NRC visitors over the years!
