Special Events News – 22 March 2015
Mid-Ulster Amateur Radio Club will be activating Slieve Gallion in the Sperrin Mountains on Sunday 22 March. This field day type event, using the callsign MN0VFW, will allow members the opportunity to work stroke portable from the view point car park. Those more willing and able will make the short trek to the top at 528m ASL to activate the actual summit. The SOTA reference is GI/SM 007. They plan to be on air between 10am and early afternoon on HF, VHF and UHF.
RAF Air Cadets from No. 2 Welsh Wing will have two stations operating on this year’s RAFARS Airfields on the Air. GB6RAF will be active on various dates until 29 March from RAF Hawarden in Flintshire using the 10 to 40m bands as well as 2m and 70cm. Then GB6RAF will be active on various dates between the 30 March and 26 April from RAF Rednal in Shropshire using the 10 to 40m bands.
Woody’s Top Youth Hostel in Lincolnshire will be the venue for the 2015 GB1BST Special Event Station, celebrating the start of British Summer Time. Operating from 27 to 29 March the site is on the Greenwich Meridian between Louth and Horncastle. Radio operations are scheduled to start late on the 27th with test transmissions on the 40m, 20m, 17m and 2m bands, which will be used during the weekend event. GB1BST has been organised by the Youth Hostels Amateur Radio Group and the Phoenix Radio Group with help from several clubs in the region. Local radio hams are invited to visit the station, and to help run it over the weekend.
Riviera ARC will take part in Airfields on the Air on 28 and 29 March from the ex RAF airfield at Haldon just outside of Teignmouth using the callsign GB4AOA. The station will comprise a Kenwood TS-590S and an offset Carolina Windom. The station will concentrate mainly on 40m SSB and 2m FM. Special QSLs are available and contacts with GB4AOA count towards the RAFARS awards for this event.
