A rather extraordinary call-in with Toby, MM0TSS

Toby, MM0TSS is a GB2RS newsreader who broadcasts on 2m from Whitecraigs in Southwest Glasgow. One of his favourite things to tell people about GB2RS is the unusual call-ins that they occasionally receive.

One was from Graham, MM0GHM, a radio amateur from Galston in Ayrshire, who works on the railways. During the summer season he is a guard on the famous Royal Scotsman Train.

When within range of the GB2RS transmission, Graham listens in from the guard’s compartment on the train. Graham is also known to call in during the after-news net; sometimes the call will be whilst the train is in motion, sometimes from a siding and others whilst at the marshalling yard.

Graham has called from locations including Springburn Sidings in April 2022, Helensburgh in August 2022 and Cowlairs in May 2024.

As for the length of the QSO, well, that depends on how fast the train is whizzing by!
