An exciting first day in Paris – written by Sophie, M7IJG

Yesterday evening and throughout our first day we met other teams and talked about different operating modes, which we all really enjoyed.
Sam, M0UEL and Leon, 2E0VUF started the day very early to help the organisers build the multitude of antennas for the radio shack, including two verticals and two cobweb antennas. This continued throughout the day and was an effort from everyone at the camp to get the shack working. It was a great opportunity to work with other young radio amateurs to build the station up, and is definitely an activity we could do more often at home.
After breakfast, we headed down to the shack for the ARISS contact with the International Space Station (ISS). I, Sophie M7IJG, was chosen to read one of the questions so I lined up to take my turn. When the connection was established, we all started reading our questions,, I asked “How does your body feel when you come back to Earth after being in space?”. Astronaut Mike Fincke, KE5AIT operated the amateur radio station call sign OR4ISS aboard the ISS and gave some fascinating answers. It was a great experience to be able to communicate with someone in space.
At the intercultural evening we all had a great time sharing our food and drinks with the other teams and getting to try some unique and tasty food. Our Yorkshire tea and biscuits were the most popular of our food.
