Robin James Melton, G0OJP – 27 October 2023

| November 27, 2023

Born in Docking, Norfolk, in 1938, Dad was always keen on radio communication and had an amazing sense of humour right until the very end of his life.

Robin moved all over North Norfolk as a child including Docking, Ringstead, Sedgeford, Fring and Holme. After two years of National Service in the RAF, he started his career as a grocer in Wisbech, Cambs, continuing in Wellingborough, Northants and Wolverton, Bucks, but soon followed his passion and changed careers to become an electrician firstly with Harland Simon in Bletchley, Bucks, then an Electrical Supervisor with Porvair in King’s Lynn, Norfolk.

Robin started out building radio controlled boats and planes, including a 1:12 scale Sopwith Camel and a fishing trawler. As an extension of this he passed his exams and became a keen radio amateur who for many years was a member of the King’s Lynn Radio Club.  He then moved to Dorset in 2001, where he continued connecting with other operators from all over the world, from his home in Maiden Newton. Robin was a keen builder of radio equipment from scratch, including several receivers and other peripherals. He later embraced computers and used packet radio and computer technology until he passed. Robin also mentored and encouraged two generations of radio amateurs: firstly me, his son Steven, (VE7SJE) then his grandson, Kevin, (2E1IGG).

Robin was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Ann, just seven weeks before his passing, and they both will be deeply missed by his whole family, including me and my wife, Cindy, his daughter Helen and her husband Stuart, plus 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
