Ian Fraser, GM8MHU, 2nd August 2017
Aberdeen Amateur Radio Society President Ian Fraser, GM8MHU passed away on the 2nd August 2017 after a long illness. Ian will be much missed by all club members and the wider amateur radio community. He was a tireless worker and promoter for Aberdeen ARS and had been its longest serving president.
In addition to being President, Ian ran the monthly club junk sales. His wit and pithy comments as auctioneer made the sales very popular. These sales were extremely successful in raising Society funds.
Ian was also the RSGB GB2RS newsreader on HF for the North East of Scotland for a number of years and made many friends on the air after the broadcast was complete.
Ian’s early years were spent in Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire, moving later to the city of Aberdeen, where he became a painter and decorator after service with the RAF. Ian passed the RAE at Aberdeen College and took out the then B licence with the callsign GM8MHU. He operated for a number of years on the higher bands. He passed his Morse test and was granted the callsign MM0CJQ although he preferred to use his old callsign on air.
In October 2016, Ian organised and lead the celebrations for the 70th Anniversary of Aberdeen ARS at the Atholl Hotel. The dinner was voted a great success by the membership.
Aberdeen Amateur Radio Society wishes to express their sincere condolences to Ian’s wife Margaret and family.
