OAS to replace AROS

Following an extensive review of the Amateur Radio Observation Service (AROS), the Society has decided to create a new service to provide guidance to operators who experience misuse of the amateur bands by others. This service will be known as the Operating Advisory Service (OAS) and will replace AROS. The change will come into effect over the next few months.

A new team of volunteers will promote good practice and take a detailed look at how to tackle problems such as on-air harassment, repeater abuse and the pirating of call signs. They will develop written advice that will be published on the OAS pages on the RSGB website.

These new arrangements are consistent with developments in the Volunteer Leadership Team which are in hand at the present time. It will provide a new team of people who can work with the Regional Team and will deliver an improved service to members. The OAS Coordinator will work with the new team to develop best practice over time.

The problems brought to the AROS changed greatly over time. Now, very few need the second opinion that the AROS Observers were there to provide. The Society would like to thank all those members who volunteered as Observers, some over many years, for their technical expertise and for their unstinting help. We are very grateful for all they have done.

These changes do not affect Intruder Watch (IW), which continues as before.
