My amateur radio inspiration by Gerry Gee, 2E0FVC
My experience with radio first came during my work in the Police. One of my Sergeants, David Jelley who is now Silent Key, was a radio amateur and invited me to visit his home shack. Following sick leave from a work injury I was then placed in the local control room operating the radios, although it wasn’t until later I decided to get my amateur radio licence.
Following retirement, I then became interested in meteor radio scatter so purchased the FunCube Dongle and was successful in making my own 2m three-element Yagi. It was fascinating watching the meteors enter the Earth’s atmosphere and look at the element composition of each one by colour. It was at this point I decided to get my licence.
I’ve also since become a member of Radio Operators Cornwall, G8ROC which does a fabulous job in promoting the hobby! To anyone thinking of getting licensed:
“I haven’t looked back since becoming a radio amateur. There is something for everyone, it never ever gets boring!”
