British Science Week

We’re delighted to announce that the RSGB is one of the official partners for British Science Week (BSW) 2025 and we have an amateur radio activity in the Community Pack!

British Science Week is a fantastic opportunity to showcase amateur radio to new audiences, regardless of age.

How was the activity developed?

The RSGB Outreach Team, working with the RSGB Comms Team, submitted two activities on this year’s theme of ‘Change and adapt’ and one was chosen for the BSW Community Pack.

The activity was created by John Hislop, G7OHO and tested by RSGB School Youth Champion Chris Aitken, MM0WIC, and other members of the RSGB Outreach Team with various groups and ages. It uses amateur radio to find out if people in different countries are seeing changes in their weather patterns.

It is a simple activity that is designed to get people on the air.

RSGB amateur radio activity in the BSW Community Pack

Community or youth groups will need access to a Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) repeater and assistance from a radio amateur – which is why we need the support of the amateur radio community to make this as effective as possible!

How do I get involved?

Take a look at our activity and think about how you could use it:

  • Could you invite people to your club to get on the air and collect this information?

  • Could you offer to go to your local school, Scout or Girlguiding group?

  • If you’re an RSGB affiliated club or group, make sure your details are up to date on our Club Finder page so people can contact you for support in doing this activity

  • Be ready to welcome any enquiries and help people to have a taste of amateur radio

What is British Science Week?

British Science Week (BSW) is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). It encourages communities, STEM professionals, educators and students to participate in engaging activities. This year’s BSW runs between 7 and 16 March and events will take place in local libraries, community hubs, schools and clubs across the UK.

You can download all the activity packs from the BSW 2025 website.
