Ian Brown, G3TVU, 24th September 2019

Ian Brown, G3TVU, known to his friends and colleagues as “Brownie”, passed away on Tuesday 24 September 2019 at the age of 78. Ian was a professional electronic engineer; he began his career at STC Microwave Systems, later moving to Rolls Royce Aero Space where he spent the remainder of his working life before retiring in 2000. At RR, along with many other projects, Ian was heavily involved with the development of radio telemetry systems.

As G3TVU, Ian was a prolific designer involved with many aspects of amateur radio, ranging from the first RSGB-published digital frequency counter design, ultrasonic receivers useful for locating arcing power line noise sources, through to user guides for, and development of, transmission path analysis software. He taught RAE classes, he gave Morse tuition, and attained the rank of Major through his involvement with the Army Cadet Force (Signals branch). Ian enjoyed portable operation and as a keen mobile operator in addition to 2m, 4m and Top Band coverage, Ian achieved DXCC on 20m SSB during his daily commutes from Ashbourne to Derby. As well as being a member of Derby RAYNET and the Nunsfield House Amateur Radio Group, Ian’s sphere of influence and involvement extended to many other radio and non-radio activities alike, far too many to mention here.

Ian’s intellect, knowledge and excellent dry wit will be greatly missed by all who knew him and his passing is a great loss to his many friends and colleagues. Ian is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Kath, their three children Philip, Jane and Robert and their grandchildren Holly, Isobel, Meghan and Owen. All our sympathies are with his family at this sad time.
