Amateur DXing at 500 million miles
Two amateurs have successfully heard signals from the European Space Agency’s Rosetta comet-seeking probe. The first was James Miller, G3RUH. He reports reception of Rosetta when it was at a distance of some 500 million miles from Earth. James accomplished this feat using the 20m dish at the Bochum observatory in Germany at 0934UTC on 21 January. The frequency was 8421.7869MHz at the spacecraft. Also successful in hearing Rosetta was Bertrand Pinel, F5PL, in France, using a 3.5m dish.
