Tony, M0SHG took just eight months to go from studying for his Foundation licence to passing his Full licence exam. Now aged 66 and having missed a significant portion of his formal education, Tony has said this was no mean feat.

The support of his local club, Cray Valley Radio Society, was instrumental in helping Tony pass. All exam candidates at the Society are allocated a mentor, which it reports as being a hugely successful part of its strategy. Tony’s mentor was Dave Thomson, G3RGS.

Tony says: “Dave’s dedication and guidance was invaluable. I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to Dave for helping me understand certain technical aspects, which at times nearly overwhelmed me.”

Cray Valley Radio Society has a growing membership, which, in part, it attributes to face-to-face training and the firm friendships that are formed during training sessions. Dave Shaw, G4N0W Publicity Officer says that special help is also available to newcomers to help set up their first station.

As for what’s next for Tony, he says:

“I’m excited to continue my learning journey and delve deeper into this fascinating hobby. Next up is to master Morse code!”
