Alex, M0MHM, now aged 12, and his Dad, Jakub, M0KUK, were on a shopping trip together when his Dad started teaching Alex the phonetic alphabet. This activity wasn’t planned, or structured, it was merely father and son enjoying some time together. However, in doing this, Alex’s interest in amateur radio was sparked.

Following this, Alex started studying for his Foundation licence, which was soon followed by his Intermediate and then his Full licence in November 2024. He particularly likes designing circuits and building electronics kits and would like to design his own radio. He is also hatching a plan for a youth competition to build a beacon finder and aerial.

Alex has also been supported by his local club, Cray Valley Radio Society, and says: “I really like my club because it’s full of people who have great ideas and lots of advice. I also like the direction-finding competitions and field days”.

Next time you are out with friends, family, or even colleagues, why not try bringing the hobby, and your love for it, into the conversation. You never know who may be interested, and who knows, you may even just spark an interest into something they may love.
