The Irish regulator ComReg is considering additional spectrum allocations to the amateur services in the bands 30 to 49MHz and 52 to 70.5MHz. The intention is to facilitate propagation beacons, digital amateur television repeaters and to align current allocations with those in the European Common Allocation Table.
During December, groups from schools, universities and local clubs are activating the callsign G15YOTA and its regional variations. Many of the operators will be experiencing amateur radio for the first time, so if you hear the station, please give them a call. On the 27th the RSGB Youth Committee will be on the air and on the 28th, Leicester Radio Society will put the call sign on the air. GM15YOTA will then be active until the end of the month.
AMSAT-UK and AMSAT-NL have announced operational times for the SSB/CW linear transponders on board the AO-73 and EO-79 satellites during the festive period. AO-73 will be available continuously until 3 January and EO-79 from the 28th until the 31st. Further information is at http://amsat-uk.org.
The RSGB Board has appointed two new trustees to the Legacy Subcommittee. They are Glen Bates, G6HFF and Lindsay Pennell, G8PMA. The Legacy Committee considers applications, and makes recommendations to the Board, for funding from the Society’s Legacy funds. Recently, two generous donations totalling £16,800 have been received from the estate of a donor who wishes to remain anonymous and have been added to the Society’s Legacy Fund.
The 5 January 2016 marks 60 years since the foundation of the UK’s largest ever amateur radio manufacturing company, KW. The KW Yahoo-Group will be celebrating the company’s 60th anniversary with KW days-on-the-air on 2 and 3 January. Daytime SSB activity centres will be on 7.177, 3.777 and 14.277MHz but operators are encouraged to use KW gear on other bands. AM activity will be on the VMARS channels.
Earlier in the year, Ofcom agreed to permit amateurs with a main station address in Cornwall use of the RSL K throughout 2016. In common with comparable past temporary RSLs, it will be available for all classes of licence, including stations participating in contests. Notices of Variation are required, which are available free via the RSGB website, but note that the K must not be used until 1 January.
