I hope to become a teaching assistant.

What inspired you to get into amateur radio? My interest in amateur radio began when I attended a Bury Radio Society talk with my dad, Paul, M7JAP. I was then convinced to take my licence exam because I needed to learn a skill for my Silver Duke of Edinburgh award. I joined Bury Radio Society and attended a meeting where I learnt a lot of exam content. I felt comfortable and confident enough to ask questions about the presentation. I kept returning to the club and found myself enjoying learning new things about amateur radio and I felt supported to get on the air.

How did you study for your exam? I used the Essex Ham website which had all the information I needed and was easily accessible and organised. I was also encouraged to ask questions during Bury Radio Society meetings – everyone was very knowledgeable and patient with me as I asked questions.

Is there a particular area of amateur radio you’re interested in learning about next? I’ve already made my first contact, and my next goal is to take part in JOTA. I am also hoping to learn how to put components together to make radio accessories and testers. Bury Radio Society have already been really helpful with this. As well as regular club talks and construction evenings, they have also provided me with one-to-one tutoring if I needed some extra help or wanted to go over a particular topic.

Any tips for other young people interested in getting into the hobby? The best tip I can give other young people interested in amateur radio is use online resources. I used an app called “UK Amateur (Ham) Radio Tests” to help me revise as it gave me access to mock exams for each level of test. As well as this, the “HamTrain Foundation Study Guide” was helpful.

I also recommend attending your local radio club to get a better look at what amateur radio is about. I found that joining a club allowed me to see the enjoyment that comes with it. It also gave me wider access to content and practical skills.

Do you have any ideas on what you’d like to see in place for new young amateurs? As a former Scout I would like to see more advertising and talks about amateur radio in the Scouts. Events like JOTA are an amazing opportunity to introduce young people to the hobby and it would be great if more radio amateurs were involved with this. I also think clubs need to use social media more to promote amateur radio at public events. Events are a great way to introduce the public to the hobby with fun activities and provide information. Having become the Treasurer of the Bury Radio Society I’ve been able to see the impact of advertisement in introducing people to the hobby for the first time or bringing people back into amateur radio.

Name: Jess Call sign: M7NGT About me: I’m currently a college student studying Level 3 Health and Social Care.
