One of my Sergeants, David Jelley who is now Silent Key, was a radio amateur and invited me to visit his home shack. Following sick leave from a work injury I was then placed\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-36250 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/rsgb.org\/main\/files\/2025\/01\/Gerry-Gee-2E0FVC-768x809-1-285x300.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Gerry Gee, 2E0FVC\" width=\"285\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgb.org\/main\/files\/2025\/01\/Gerry-Gee-2E0FVC-768x809-1-285x300.jpg 285w, https:\/\/rsgb.org\/main\/files\/2025\/01\/Gerry-Gee-2E0FVC-768x809-1-142x150.jpg 142w, https:\/\/rsgb.org\/main\/files\/2025\/01\/Gerry-Gee-2E0FVC-768x809-1.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 285px) 100vw, 285px\" \/>in the local control room operating the radios, although it wasn\u2019t until later I decided to get my amateur radio licence.<\/p>\n<p>Following retirement, I then became interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/rsgb.org\/main\/technical\/propagation\/meteor-scatter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>meteor radio scatter<\/strong><\/a> so purchased the <a href=\"https:\/\/funcube.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>FunCube<\/strong> <\/a>Dongle\u00a0\u00a0and was successful in making my own 2m three-element Yagi. It was fascinating watching the meteors enter the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere and look at the element composition of each one by colour. It was at this point I decided to get my licence.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also since become a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/g8roc.org.uk\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Radio Operators Cornwall<\/strong><\/a>, G8ROC which does a fabulous job in promoting the hobby! To anyone thinking of getting licensed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI haven\u2019t looked back since becoming a radio amateur.
