In August 2024, Noel Moore, GI7CMC, took part in the YO-DX-HF contest. It also happened to be the weekend his grandchildren, Alfie aged ten and Penny aged five, were visiting. Having previously talked to them about his interest in amateur radio, Noel took the opportunity to show them \u2018Grandad in action\u2019. Noel was also delighted to be able to take advantage of this year\u2019s changes to the licence conditions<\/strong><\/a> and supervise them on the air.<\/p>\n

During the contest Alfie and Penny helped their Grandad to keep the online log of contest contacts. The children were very excited to record contacts from countries including Latvia, Russia, Hungary, Italy, Sweden, Bulgaria and Romania. They also made contact with Jamie, G0XJS, from Exmouth, who took some time out of the contest to stop and speak with Alfie and Penny. Both children, with Grandad\u2019s help, made their first QSO and spelt their name phonetically to Jamie.<\/p>\n

As part of Alfie’s summer homework, he was asked to write up what he\u2019d been doing during the school holidays. His submission included the following description of contesting: \u201cMy Grandad is a radio amateur. He told me there was a contest. Once we were in his shed we started the contest, which involved finding a radio station, talking to the other person on the radio, and recording the details.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alfie and Penny have said they are already looking forward to helping Grandad on their next visit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
