Ian and his team have been very active in sharing amateur radio at schools as well as visiting local clubs and encouraging club members.

Ian explains: “We’ve been showcasing amateur radio at special events to educate the public. During British Science Week, we demonstrated at a new school, delighting pupils who had not seen Snail Morse Keys. This led to another event at a small school studying WWII and Morse Code, where pupils role-played spies.

We had an ISS contact from Newton Aycliffe, where 250 attendees enjoyed a Q&A with astronauts, organised by a charity for children with special needs. More events are planned to demonstrate amateur radio to the public.

Radio club visits are ongoing, explaining new Ofcom rules and promoting interest in different modes of operation, and self-development including Brickworks.”

Regional engagement

Regional Team members contribute to disseminating information and encouraging people to join the RSGB at various rallies and events throughout the year. By engaging with other amateurs, Regional and District Representatives gather valuable feedback and insights, which are then communicated to other parts of the RSGB.

The Regional Team supports clubs in their endeavours to grow amateur radio and also assists clubs by responding to enquiries from individuals interested in the hobby and by disseminating knowledge about the diverse aspects of amateur radio. This guidance helps to enable education and learning within clubs.

For example, the Regional Team has assisted individuals, clubs and groups in the interpretation of the new Ofcom licence changes with the support of a range of RSGB videos and webinars. You can see all of these on the RSGB’s YouTube channel – go to youtube.com/theRSGB and search for the ‘Ofcom Consultation guidance’ playlist.

The Regional Team collaborates closely with staff at HQ and other parts of the RSGB to contribute to cost-cutting activities and, as part of this, many meetings are now conducted by videoconference using MS Teams or scheduled to coincide with other events, such as rallies.

If you are interested in supporting any of these initiatives, the Regional Team offers numerous opportunities to get involved. Contact your local Regional Representative (RR) or District Representative (DR) to learn more about how you can contribute. The Regional Team is always looking for enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about amateur radio and eager to make a difference. Find out more on the RSGB website at rsgb.org/regions

Nathan Nuttall, 2M0OCC and Tony Miles, MM0TMZ

Board Directors

2m0occ@rsgb.org.uk

You can also find this update in the August 2024 RadCom

Strategy in action by the Regional Team The Regional Team has been active over the past few months, collaborating with numerous clubs and participating in a variety of club visits, rallies and outreach events.
