While the team were hard at work with repairs, Jim, aged 85 and a former Royal Signals Radio Operator, was able to share his wealth of radio knowledge, including advice on coiling wires and siting aerials.

Jim said: “I could not have asked for a better group of youngsters, they’re a credit to the hobby.”

The team assisted in cutting a dipole for a 60m spot frequency, made a fan dipole for some of the higher HF bands, and fault-finded the various rotators and winch systems.

They also helped with some reorganising and labelling of the feeders coming into the shack.

As a thank you to GUWS, who don’t currently have their own shack, Jim has invited them back to use his QTH as their /A shack.""
