In 1948 he joined the University Air Squadron, piloting a range of aircraft including his favourite, the Tiger Moth.<\/p>\n<p>Between 1953 and 1968 he was employed at Shorts Brothers, Belfast, as a Research and Design Engineer. From 1968 to 1993 Sam worked in the Pure and Applied Physics Department at Queen\u2019s University, Belfast (QUB) on a range of cutting-edge projects.<\/p>\n<p>He was renowned for his Heath Robinson approach to engineering and design. He had numerous glorious brushes with death in a variety of accidents throughout his life. He was a keen skier, a hobby he pursued until he was 80 years old.<\/p>\n<p>He will be fondly remembered by his students, colleagues, friends and family.
